Midnight Margaritas: Let’s Make some Magic Together!
With the release of Practical Magic 2 I was inspired to watch the original again to remind myself of why I liked that movie. Of course, the most iconic moment is the Midnight Margarita scene set to the hypnotic sounds and lyrics of Harry Nilsson’s tune “Coconut.” The scene is as simple, organic and delicious as the drink itself! Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, along with Stockard Channing and Dianne West enjoy their magical cocktail at midnight while “dancing like no one is watching,” savoring and enjoying every moment. You can just feel that the drink is as delicious as the moment and the company.
The movie has inspired a whole new batch of variations of the Midnight Margarita. This one caught my eye for the color of the muddled black raspberries and the seasonal garnish of rosemary which will help make it a fall favorite. Magical Midnight Margarita by Bon Appetite. I would recommend you substitute agave for the sugar and only sweeten to taste. It looks very fresh and refreshing! We might dress it up with a dehydrated lime, too. Make it your own – play with variations. Put a little of your own Magic in it!
Everyone has their own recipe and variation on what makes the best margarita. Obviously you want to start with some quality tequila, 100% agave is best. Most people prefer Skinny Margaritas today which are as “back to the basics” as you can get. Using only tequila, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice and agave syrup to taste. Swapping out the old bar standard margarita mix loaded with high fructose corn syrup and very little real lime juice as well as the sugar and additional alcohol found in Cointreau or triple sec or even Grand Marnier. A Skinny Margarita is a purist drink for sure. We like to add a little club soda or sparkling water just to break up the juice and add a little lift and fizz to the drink. We love bubbles! They are liquid sprinkles and sparkles!
